Adult Learning Center opens new training program

Jul. 22—New Mexico gets more than 300 days of sunshine a year, and there's a new way to turn that into a career.

Albuquerque Adult Learning Center opened a new building last week where adults can train for careers in the solar energy industry.

ABQ-ALC's new building, at 1201 San Mateo SE, will be the site of the Solar Integrated Education & Training Program.

During the program, adults can earn their high school equivalency and a Solar Installer/Photovoltaic Certificate.

The building was purchased with a federal appropriation given to members of Congress. Rep. Melanie Stansbury, D-N.M., used her funding for the learning center building.

She said the program will give people a pathway to a career with development opportunities.

"Every single person deserves access to education and opportunity, and that's why securing funding for non-traditional school programs is so important," Stansbury said in a statement.

Gloria Rael, the executive director of ABQ-ALC, said the learning center trains more than 250 people each year. Much of the training happens at community centers throughout the metro area.

"We're honored to expand our program offerings for those who are working so hard to better their lives through education," Rael said.
