Affordable senior housing in Southern Nevada in high demand

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – Having an affordable roof over your head is a problem for thousands across Southern Nevada including seniors.

Numerous affordable housing projects are popping up across the valley but not fast enough.

A new 171 affordable housing units for seniors are going up on West Sahara Avenue near Buffalo Drive and will open in the fall. It joins a growing list of buildings going up in the valley including in North Las Vegas where a 220-unit building opened on Monday.

With all those projects there is still a need for nearly 90,000 affordable housing units for seniors in Southern Nevada.

The new property is called West Sahara Senior Housing and will be one of the first affordable housing for seniors on the west side. It was funded by federal dollars from COVID relief funds, and they already have a long waiting list. The complex will be full when it opens this coming fall.

Developer George Gekakis has put up numerous projects like this and said when seniors move in, they tend to stay.

“When seniors move here I’ve had some of them live here be over 100 and it’s been great and we see what they need, this one is all seniors 55+ and we’re excited about this especially to have a development on West Sahara Avenue,” he said.

To qualify seniors must make over $1,072 a month and they can’t make over $3,000 a month. West Sahara Senior Housing now has a leasing office right across from the apartment site, at 7975 West Sahara Avenue, #103 in the Trident Business Park. You can go in person or call their phone number 725-251-2163 to get on the waiting list.

More affordable units are in the works including 195 units at Pebble Eastern Avenue Senior Apartments, 125 units at Buffalo Drive and Cactus Avenue apartments, and a new 36 unit in Laughlin. Which could give seniors more options on where to live out their golden years.
