Albuquerque welcomes seventh poet laureate

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The City of Albuquerque officially has a new poet laureate.

Damien Flores was named the seventh poet laureate of the city on Sunday.

The event was held at the Albuquerque Museum, where the community heard the writings of past laureates and the newest person named to the role.

Flores has deep roots in Albuquerque as he grew up here and found his love for poetry while attending Albuquerque High School. Now, years later, he hopes to put more emphasis on a poetry curriculum in public education.

Flores starts his work in the community on Monday by helping with KUNM’s radio program “Generation Justice.”

Throughout the rest of his two-year term, he will focus on city poetry events, working on an anthology, and additional lesson plans for public school students of all ages.
