ALLIANCE ‒ Two fugitives were caught after a high-speed chase Friday afternoon that started in Alliance and ended near Atwater with a crash.

Both men, the 29-year-old driver and his 22-year-old passenger, were wanted on felony charges in Canton. The driver also had a felony warrant in Denton, Texas, said Alliance Police Capt. James Hilles.

Explaining the pursuit, Hilles said Alliance officers were watching a house in the 1400 block of Pike Street around 2:30 p.m. after receiving information both men would be there.

Both were, Hilles said, but they fled in a Jeep Cherokee when officers attempted to stop and arrest the men on East Patterson Street. From there, the chase was on.

The men and the officers weaved up and down, left and right, through eight city streets − all on the north side − topping speeds at 70 mph, Hilles said.

The chase left the city limits, going into Lexington Township, on Edison Street. It turned northbound on McCallum Avenue NE, passed Walborn Reservoir and entered Portage County.

Hilles said the chase ended on Waterloo Road, west of Atwater, after the driver veered the Jeep Cherokee down a ravine into some trees because the tires blew, leaving only rims.

Prior to the crash, Hilles said, the passenger bailed out of the vehicle and was captured. The driver crashed a minute later and also was taken into custody.

Hilles said the driver sustained some injuries from the crash and was treated at Aultman Hospital in Canton. Both men were to be booked into the Stark County Jail.

Both men, Hilles said, face additional felony and misdemeanor charges from the chase. He said officers found a pistol, a stolen handgun and packaged marijuana in the vehicle.
