Amarillo police SVU seeks community's help to ID assault suspect

The Amarillo Police Department’s Special Victims Unit is seeking the community’s help in identifying a suspect involved in a reported attack over the weekend.

APD said the incident occurred early Sunday between 3:30 and 5 a.m. According to police, a woman was walking to work near SW 34th Avenue and Royal Drive when an unknown male suspect attacked her from behind, near the west alley. APD said the woman successfully fought off her attacker, and the suspect fled the scene on foot. He was last seen in the 3400 block of Royal Drive.

APD said the woman reported seeing the man earlier driving a silver minivan before he approached her on foot.

The Special Victims Unit is asking residents in the area to review any outside security camera footage for possible images of the suspect walking or running or his driving a silver minivan in the vicinity of SW 34th Avenue, Royal Drive, and the west alley during that time frame. Footage can be shared via a community link and QR code, shared in the police community message.

"Thankfully, the victim sustained only minor injuries and was able to get away and seek help," APD said. "However, we need your assistance to identify this individual and prevent him from harming anyone else."

Anyone who may have information about this incident or video footage is asked to contact the Amarillo Police Department.
