'Angry' suspect lights residential Martinez mailbox on fire

The Columbia County Sheriff's Office is investigating after a person lit a residential Martinez mailbox on fire Sunday night.

A 24-year-old woman told deputies said she was sitting in her living room when she heard consistent honking outside of her house, according to an incident report.

She went outside and noticed a blue SUV with next to a mailbox on fire, according to the report. She called 911 and the SUV fled toward South Old Belair Road.

When deputies arrived at the scene, the fire department was extinguishing the fire, according to the report. Deputies met with a neighbor who said he knew who started the fire.

The neighbor, who is renting, said he knew the suspect through his friend staying at the house, according to the report. He told deputies the suspect "was angry" at the friend, and that the pair had "previous relations."

He said the same suspect set trash on fire next to the mailbox earlier in the day, according to the report.

However, he would not provide the name of the friend, deputies noted in the report. He did give a vehicle description that matched the 24-year-old woman's description.

Deputies were unable to make contact with the owner of the property, according to the report.
