UPDATE: Suspect dead after officer-involved shooting on S. Georgia Monday

Police confirmed a man is dead after a brief encounter with police that stemmed from an apparent domestic assault the day before but that ended in a shooting Monday afternoon at a south Amarillo residence.

At about 4:19 p.m. Sunday, June 23, Amarillo officers were sent to the Dollar Tree located in the 3400 block of South Georgia on a reported shooting, according to a statement from Amarillo police. Witnesses at the scene told officers they saw a woman being thrown from a vehicle. When the witnesses intervened, a man in the vehicle fired rounds at them. A witness then returned fire, and the male suspect fled the scene in the vehicle.

Through investigations, the male suspect was ultimately identified as Kurt David Cobain Gaede, 25.

On Monday, June 24, members of APD's Special Operations Task Force learned that Gaede was also wanted on an outstanding felony warrant out of Randall County for burglary. APD said task force officers went to the last known address for Gaede, which was in the 300 block of South Georgia.

They saw a man they believed to be Gaede approach the front of the residence and knock on the door, according to police. The man was denied entry. Task force officers then approached the front of the residence and attempted to make contact with him.

He did not comply with officers’ commands and fled on foot to the back of a residence, APD said. Officers gave chase, and Gaede displayed a firearm. "This action resulted in a task force officer discharging his firearm striking Gaede," APD stated. Gaede was taken to a local area hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. His family has been notified.

The case continues to be investigated by APD's Homicide Unit, which can be reached at 806-378-9468 if anyone has any additional information.

APD had issued a traffic advisory earlier in the day, advising those traveling to the area to find an alternate route.

This is a developing story; more information will be added as it becomes available.
