Areas of Kings County to close for high-speed rail project

KINGS COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – Some areas in Kings County will be closed due to work being done for the California High-Speed Rail project, officials announced.

Officials with the California High-Speed Rail Authority, along with the Dragados-Flatiron Joint Venture, announced the intermittent lane closures along Highway 198 between Sixth Avenue and Highway 43 in Kings County for ongoing work at the Hanford Viaduct.

The work is scheduled from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. beginning July 22 through July 26.

At the same time, officials also say there will be a road closure on Iona Avenue between Highway 43 and Seventh Avenue in Kings County until Aug. 23. Traffic going eastbound on Iona Avenue will be detoured north of Highway 43, east of Houston Avenue, south of Seventh Avenue, then east on Iona Avenue.

According to officials, traffic going westbound on Iona Avenue will be detoured south of Seventh Avenue, west on Houston Avenue, south on Highway 43, and then west on Iona Avenue.

There will also be a road closure along Highway 137 and Waukena Avenue, between Fifth Avenue and the Orange Avenue connector road in Kings County for the construction of high-speed rail overcrossing. Officials say work is scheduled to begin on Aug. 19, 2024, and will continue through August 2026.

All closures, according to the High-Speed Rail Authority, are part of the Construction Package 2-3, the 65-mile stretch of high-speed rail between East American Avenue in Fresno County and one mile north of the Tulare-Kern County line.
