New arrest made in connection with surfers deaths in Baja California

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Mexican officials on Tuesday announced a new arrest in connection with the deaths of three men during an April surfing trip in Baja California.

Brothers Jake and Callum Robinson of Australia and Jack Carter Rhoad of San Diego were camping in Punta San Jose, south of Ensenada, when they were approached by robbers and shot, Baja California Attorney General Maria Elena Andrade Ramírez said at the time. She said one of the victims refused to give up his truck’s tires.

“One of the assailants pulled out a firearm and shot him,” she said. “The other two jumped in to intervene but were also shot.”

The three surfers’ bodies were later found in a 50-foot-deep well. A fourth body was also found.

Angel Jesus “N,” 31, of Ensenada was arrested in the community of Santo Tomas, the Secretary of Citizen Security of Baja California announced Tuesday.

The arrest comes two months after Jesus Gerardo “N,” whose nickname was “El Kekas,” was taken into custody.

The parents of Jake and Callum spoke publicly in Ocean Beach days after their sons were killed.

“Our hearts are broken and the world has become a darker place for us,” Debra Robinson said.

She described Callum as a “loveable, larger-than-life character” who played professional lacrosse, and Jake as a “happy, gentle and compassionate soul” who was pursuing a career in medicine.

The deaths come almost a decade after two Australian surfers were killed in Sinaloa state.
