Department of Agriculture says Asian longhorned tick found

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) – Officials with the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture (ODAFF) confirmed on Tuesday, the first case of Asian longhorned ticks in Oklahoma. The tick was detected in Mayes County, according to ODAFF.

In large numbers the Asian longhorned tick may cause severe anemia to the animals it infests, and carry both human and animal diseases, ODAFF says.

ODAFF acknowledged an epidemiological investigation is set to be conducted in learning how the ticks arrived in Oklahoma and to determine if it is present on other premises. ODAFF officials are encouraging all livestock owners to closely monitor their livestock.
