Athens man arrested for sexual assault of 16-year-old girl after running off to New York

ATHENS, Ala. (WHNT) — The Athens Police Department partnered with a New York sheriff’s office to locate and arrest a man charged with sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl.

On May 9, the Athens Police Department said they received a report of a girl who was sexually assaulted.

Officers named 36-year-old Oscar Ariel Duarte Rodriguez as the suspect in the assault.

On June 27, APD Detective Melissa Meadows found Rodriguez had fled to Putman County, New York. Meadows contacted the Putman County Sheriff’s Office to help her with finding Rodriguez.

He was found and arrested by the Putman County Sheriff’s Office. On July 16, the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office arranged to have Rodriguez transported back to Alabama.

He was arrested and charged with one count of first-degree rape. He is being held in the Limestone County Jail without bond, pending an Aniah’s Law hearing.
