August brings 15th anniversary of Pedestrian Safety Month

HONOLULU (KHON2) — August has been designated as Pedestrian Safety Month now in its 15th year, to raise awareness about pedestrian safety.

Officials report that so far in 2024, there have been 20 pedestrian fatalities, with 13 of these occurring when pedestrians were crossing the street outside marked crosswalks.

Throughout the month, a series of events will be held to remind both drivers and pedestrians to remain vigilant.

“When we’re walking—whether it’s with our dogs, for our health, with strollers, or just for exercise—we need to look out for each other and stay alert,” said Governor Josh Green.

The Department of Transportation and traffic safety partners hope the governor’s proclamation will encourage improved safety measures for both motorists and pedestrians.
