Austin-Bergstrom saw record numbers in 2023

As Austin has increasingly become a hub for business and travel, the airport has drawn in record-high numbers of travelers over the past two years. Austin-Bergstrom saw upwards of 22 million travelers in 2023, making it the busiest year since opening for the second year in a row.

Texas-based Southwest Airlines beat out other airlines in the number of passengers served in Austin by a margin of over 3 million, serving 8.5 million passengers in total.

Why is Austin's airport called Bergstrom?

ABIA began as Del Valle Army Air Base and was activated in September 1942. The base was renamed after Captain John A.E. Bergstrom, the first native Austinite killed in World War II in November 1943. Though the base was deactivated in 1993, the name carried over when it was reopened as an airport in 1999.

The name is not without controversy, and several local groups have pushed for it to be changed to honor other prominent Austinites, from Lyndon B. Johnson to Willie Nelson.
