Ava Estes is the first-ever recipient of the Chris Eaton Memorial Scholarship
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The Chris Eaton Foundation has officially announced the first recipient of the Chris Eaton Memorial Scholarship, Ava Estes of Cibola High School. Estes was a Cibola girl’s soccer team captain, MVP, All-Star and All-State selection and one of two Cibola 2024 class valedictorians. The first ever recipient of the memorial scholarship, Estes will receive $10,000 towards her education.
“You know, I am incredibly honored and grateful to be the first recipient of this scholarship and it truly has been a blessing, and the scholarship and foundation just ensure that coach Eaton’s legacy will continue on and so it’s just amazing to be apart of it”, said Estes.
Ava was selected from a group of 25 outstanding applicants from high schools all across Albuquerque. With the goal of becoming a neonatal surgeon, Ava will pursue a pre-med track at the University of Miami to obtain a bachelor of science degree in biology with a minor in chemistry. In addition to her academic and athletic credentials, Ava volunteered in the Neonatal and Pediatric Care Units at Presbyterian Rust Medical Center. She also volunteered with Seed2Need, a nonprofit corporation created to reduce hunger by growing produce for local food pantries. Ava proved to be a perfect fit for this scholarship.
“You know she just came out as the clear winner and we really want to enlist her as part of the family and a part of the family of the Chris Eaton Foundation. We know she is going to be an excellent advocate”, said Michael Eaton, Chris Eaton’s Brother and Foundation President.
Michael is excited to continue the mission of his brother and that is to help local student-athletes. The mission of the Chris Eaton Foundation is to raise awareness of mental, Physical, and Emotional health issues and resources, and Michael is excited to see the foundation grow and help more and more people in the future.
“You know some of the enhancements that we are going to make for the scholarship next year, I think we are going to have multiple winners that has been talked about. You know, I really want to see the foundation as the epidemy of health and I want to partner with those companies and partner with those businesses and the government to be able to help our kids live as healthy as possible. so, that is ultimately the goal”, said Michael Eaton.
