MOSINEE – Avelo Airlines will discontinue its services through the Central Wisconsin Airport at the end of next month.

According to a news release from the Central Wisconsin Airport, CWA learned Avelo Airlines would discontinue service from Mosinee to Orlando effective Aug. 31. Flights scheduled between now and then will not be affected.

An Avelo Airlines representative shared that the route between Mosinee and Orlando was not profitable and Avelo does not expect it to be within a reasonable amount of time, according to the release.

“Every route Avelo flies must be profitable or be on a trend line towards that goal,” the Avelo representative said in the CWA release. “We are grateful for the support Avelo has received from the central Wisconsin community and CWA’s leadership team.”

Brian Grefe, the airport director at CWA, said the news is disappointing for central Wisconsin.

“We understand the impact this has on our passengers and local community and will continue to actively explore opportunities with other carriers to ensure we continue to provide robust travel options,” Grefe said.

Avelo's decision to end services at CWA comes less than a year after the partnership was first announced. CWA and Avelo Airlines announced last July its new partnership with the direct flight between Mosinee and Orlando at a press conference. That partnership included an introductory deal that allowed customers to book one-way flights between the two locations starting at $49 that began in October.

Avelo is a low-cost carrier, so prices vary between various trips and ticket offers, but ticket prices remain lower than other options. Prices vary based on demand like most other companies.

At the press conference last summer, the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation celebrated the partnership, saying that air transportation is essential to local economies like central Wisconsin. The partnership created opportunities for business and recreational travel in central Wisconsin, Missy Hughes, WEDC's secretary and CEO said at the time.

Avelo Airlines took its first flight April 28, 2021. The company aims to offer options for customers to save time and money, and it was founded with the purpose to "inspire travel." Last summer, a company spokesperson said Avelo likes to partner with smaller communities and airports like CWA to provide easier and more enjoyable flights.
