Former President Barack Obama penned a letter to President Joe Biden after he declared he’d be bowing out of the presidential election. On Sunday (July 21), Black America’s forever President took to Medium.com, where he uploaded his statement regarding his former running mate. Obama asserted that President Biden’s decision to drop out of the race was admirable and called the man “a patriot of the highest order.”

“Joe understands better than anyone the stakes in this election — how everything he has fought for throughout his life, and everything that the Democratic Party stands for, will be at risk if we allow Donald Trump back in the White House and give Republicans control of Congress,” Obama penned in his lengthy statement.

“I also know Joe has never backed down from a fight. For him to look at the political landscape and decide that he should pass the torch to a new nominee is surely one of the toughest in his life. But I know he wouldn’t make this decision unless he believed it was right for America. It’s a testament to Joe Biden’s love of country — and a historic example of a genuine public servant once again putting the interests of the American people ahead of his own that future generations of leaders will do well to follow.”

As he continued, the former commander-in-chief spoke to the “unprecedented” times America was headed for in the aftermath of Biden’s decision. However, Barack Obama maintained that he had faith that the country would make the right decision and carry “the message of hope” to the ballot in November.

President Joe Biden announced that he would drop out of the race on Sunday. The Pennslyvania native posted his historic message to X/Twitter, stating that he would no longer be seeking a second term. While he didn’t explicitly state why or how he arrived at the decision, President Biden asserted that he would address the country on his decision “later this week in more detail.”

“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” he typed.

But, uncertainty loomed over the Democratic Party for only an hour as Vice President Kamala Harris announced that she would be taking up the fight against former President Donald Trump. After her announcment, Democrats immediately threw their support behind her, declaring her the one who would defeat Trump in November.
