Baton Rouge animal rescue gets $22K to help more baby kittens get essential medical care

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — A Baton Rouge animal rescue group is getting a $22,500 grant from the Orphan Kitten Club to help neonatal cats get the care they need.

The OKC Mightycat program will help Companion Animal Alliance get more supplies and medical staff to care for newborn cats. According to a news release from CAA, they expect to take in about 350 neonatal kittens for fostering this year.

“Through our partnership with Orphan Kitten Club and their generous award, we hope to
set up our neonatal kitten fosters for greater success and also expand our neonatal
foster kitten network. This will not only save the lives of more neonatal kittens but also
empower our fosters to provide the best possible care for these precious lives,” said CAA
Executive Director Jillian Sergio said in the release.

OKC works to reduce the number of neonatal euthanizations and help the youngest animals get better care. According to the news release, kittens eight weeks and younger account for half of feline deaths because they are put to sleep more than any other age range. Caring for these small animals is a challenge because they need caretakers with special skills and help throughout the day and night.

“Our Mightycat partners are shelters and foster-based rescues that are truly aligned with
our mission to increase lifesaving programs for kittens under eight weeks old,” said
Jackie Noble, executive director of the Orphan Kitten Club. “We’re proud to partner with
Companion Animal Alliance to move the needle for neonatal kittens in Louisiana and set
up their foster program with a strong foundation and plan for continued growth.”
