Baton Rouge man charged with attempted murder; police say he hit woman with bat

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — The Baton Rouge Police Department arrested a man accused of attempted second-degree murder, theft of a firearm and other charges.

Russell Butler, 56, of Baton Rouge was arrested and booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on charges of attempted second-degree murder, theft of a firearm, unauthorized entry of an inhabited dwelling, theft and possession of Schedule II drug.

Detectives responded to a home located on Lobelia Avenue on Thursday, Sept. 5. According to an affidavit, detectives were informed that a woman, who was in the home, was awakened by a disruption in her bedroom.

Detectives identified Butler as the suspect who was in the woman’s room. According to an arrest affidavit, he stole the woman’s money. Butler and the woman got into a physical fight, and Butler reportedly hit the woman with a bat. The strike caused her to have a large gash on her forehead. Butler also reportedly took the woman’s gun before leaving.

According to the affidavit, the woman told detectives that Butler “no longer lives at this location and that he does not have a key.”

Officers found Butler in the immediate area and placed him under arrest. Officers also seized around $155 and around one gram of suspected crack cocaine, according to arrest documents.
