Baton Rouge mom taking action, says daycare blamed baby’s bruises on allergies

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — A Baton Rouge daycare is under scrutiny by the state after a mother said she picked up her child with several unexplained bruises on his body.

Chandra’s Childcare & Learning Center in Baton Rouge is a house in a residential neighborhood. It’s where Genene Davis said her 15-month-old child, Gabriel, somehow got bruises on his face, forehead, and back.

The owner of the childcare center said the bruises were an allergic reaction to a new rug but Davis said a doctor told her a different theory.

“He said these are bruises. He actually told me the type of bruise it was, but he couldn’t tell me how or what the bruise came from,” said Davis.

Davis thinks the facility is operating without a state license. So, we checked, and according to the Louisiana Department of Education, it’s not licensed. If the facility has seven or more children, state law requires a license.

We visited the daycare business to ask on Thursday.

“How many children are in there?” we asked.

“We’re going to have to say no comment,” said a man who answered the door and told BRProud his name was Mr. Williams.

“Well, you’re not licensed,” we said.

“We’re going to have to say no comment sir,” said the man.

Davis said she met with the Department of Children and Families Services on Friday morning to begin an abuse investigation.

We reached out to DCFS and they released this statement:

“Due to state confidentiality laws, we cannot comment on or acknowledge the existence of an investigation,” DCFS said.

Baton Rouge police said they have opened up a cruelty to juvenile investigation case.
