Beaufort County is under a flood watch. How much rain is predicted to fall Thursday?

A moist atmosphere and slow-moving storms headed to the Southeast were expected to bring heavy rainfall and possible flooding to the Lowcountry on Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

The incoming deluge, which could amount up to 3 inches of rain, triggered a flood watch for Beaufort County. Locally, 4 inches of rainfall is possible, the NWS’ Charleston office said. Meteorologists predicted the downpour would begin in the afternoon and last into the evening.

Strong-to-marginally severe isolated thunderstorms could also develop Thursday, starting in the afternoon and petering out by the early evening. Wind gusts from strong storms can down trees and power lines, particularly where soils become saturated, the service said.

Steven Taylor, an NWS Charleston meteorologist, said flash flooding was possible Thursday. Similar weather patterns are expected through Saturday, Taylor said.

The torrent’s timing on Thursday and Friday interact with 8-foot high tides in Beaufort and on Hilton Head Island, according to US Harbors. The NWS urged people to move parked cars out of flood-prone areas and not drive into flood waters.
