Becky and Klaus Hein of Keedysville receive recognition for community service

At the 2024 Maryland State Society Daughters of the American Revolution State Conference, chapters around the state nominated worthy individuals to receive recognition for their community service.

Antietam Chapter, Linda Bland Matthews, Regent, from Washington County sponsored Becky and Klaus Hein of Keedysville.

Becky Hein is making a difference with literacy in Washington County. In 1993, Becky became an adult literacy tutor. She trained in the Laubach Method to become the first fully certified tutor trainer for the Literacy Council of Washington County.

The volunteer tutors work one on one with the adults, helping them to read and write better, prepare for GED tests, or learn to speak and write English.

Becky is a tutor, a tutor trainer and she evaluates new Basic students.

The Literacy Council currently has about 40 tutor/student pairs. Becky has been on the organization’s board of directors and is currently serving as board president.

She received the Volunteer of the Year Award from the Community Foundation of Washington County in 2022.

Becky also volunteers with Sleep in Heavenly Peace. Sleep in Heavenly Peace is an American non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that builds and delivers beds to children who do not have one of their own.

Her husband Klaus occasionally helps with the deliveries and enjoys volunteering as Santa during the deliveries at Christmas time. Becky does the delivery coordination for the local SHP chapter. “No kid sleeps on the floor in Washington County.”
