Bent Beam Brewing changes plans for Canton site

Jul. 24—CANTON — The developers of a proposed brewpub in the old Mattress Barn on West Main Street have been forced to change plans.

Originally, St. Lawrence Suds, the developers of Bent Beam Brewing, were going to refurbish the building, which can be traced back to Canton founder Stillman Foote.

A report from contractor Northern Tier Contracting indicated the building was unsafe. The firm halted its work in May.

Gary Hammond, St. Lawrence Suds' chief financial officer, said plans to construct a new building were in the works and would be unveiled soon.

He said St. Lawrence Suds is determined to continue with the project.

A report from Tisdale and Associates Consulting Engineers said the foundation was inadequate, fire damage was more extensive than thought, walls were beginning to collapse, and jacking up the building to lay a new foundation was not possible.

In a letter from Northern Tier filed in the public records for the July 17 meeting of the Canton Village Board of Trustees, the contractors said they had installed temporary supports to prevent the building from collapsing.

In 2022, the group received a $500,000 Restore New York grant to redevelop the property.

In May, the group held a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the beginning of construction.

The contractor discovered the structural problems in the days following the groundbreaking.
