Bicycle rider dead after crash with SLCSO vehicle ID'd as 58-year-old Fort Pierce man

ST. LUCIE COUNTY − A bicycle rider who died over the weekend after a crash involving an off-duty St. Lucie County Sheriff’s deputy driving an unmarked vehicle was identified as a 58-year-old man from Fort Pierce, according to the Florida Highway Patrol and the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash on Okeechobee Road just west of Sneed Road in western St. Lucie County was reported at 1:38 a.m. Saturday to the FHP, the FHP stated. The location is west of the St. Lucie County Fairgrounds.

The FHP stated the bicycle rider was traveling west on Okeechobee Road in the inside lane. An unmarked St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office Ford Explorer also traveled west in the inside line, and struck the bicycle rider from behind, the FHP stated.

The Sheriff’s Office stated the bicycle rider died at the scene, and that the driver of the unmarked vehicle was a sheriff’s deputy who had just finished a shift.

The FHP identified the driver of the unmarked sheriff’s vehicle as a 37-year-old man from Okeechobee.

The FHP did not release the name of the deceased bicycle rider or the deputy, who was placed on administrative leave after the crash. The Sheriff’s Office in a social media post referred questions to the FHP.
