FORT PIERCE — A bicyclist died early Saturday in a crash with an off-duty St. Lucie County sheriff’s deputy west of Fort Pierce, according to sheriff’s officials.

Sheriff’s deputies and Florida Highway Patrol officers were called just before 3 a.m. Saturday to the 23000 block of Okeechobee Road, west of Fort Pierce, according to officials. That’s about 7 miles west of the St. Lucie County Fairgrounds.

They found a person on a bicycle who had had been involved in a fatal crash with an off-duty sheriff’s deputy driving an unmarked agency vehicle, according to officials. The deputy had just competed a shift at the time of the crash.

The bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said. The off-duty deputy involved in the crash was placed on administrative leave, which is the standard policy of the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office.

No further information about the bicyclist, including gender, hometown, age and name, were released, nor was the name of the sheriff's deputy disclosed. FHP, which is handling the ongoing investigation, also revealed no details about the circumstances of the crash.

Neither FHP nor the St. Lucie County Fire District could be reached Saturday for comment. St. Lucie County sheriff's spokesperson Tonya Woodworth said she didn't expect the Sheriff's Office to release any more information Saturday.
