Big changes this year: Ohio sales tax holiday starts July 30

Jul. 17—Ohioans have enjoyed a tax-free weekend for nearly a decade, but the 2024 Ohio sales tax holiday will save consumers even more money.

In the past, this annual tax-free weekend has occurred in early August from a Friday through a Sunday. Designed to help back-to-school shoppers, the sales tax exemption was applied to clothing priced $75 or less and to school supplies priced $20 or less.

Not this year.

The 2024 tax-free holiday starts at 12 a.m. on Tuesday, July 30, and ends at 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 8.

"This year's tax holiday period includes more eligible items and offers much higher price limits on items that will not be taxed, up to $500," Ashtabula County Commissioner Casey Kozlowski said.

While sales tax is the primary source of revenue for county government, County Commissioner J.P. Ducro IV said he supports it.

"It is a great way to provide help to Ohio residents, especially during school shopping and while the cost of living is still rising," he said. "Hopefully, our residents take full advantage of it and we remind them to always shop local when they can to support our local economy."

There is no limit on the amount of the total purchase. The qualification is determined item by item.

Internet sales during the holiday also qualify for the sales tax exemption if the consumer orders and pays for the item and the retailer accepts the order during the exemption period for immediate shipment.

The only exceptions are:

—Alcoholic beverages

—Marijuana products

—Motor vehicles

—Services normally subject to sales tax

—Tobacco and vapor products

—Watercraft or outboard motors that must be titled
