Biomedical company Chronix sets up shop in SD

BROOKINGS, S.D. (AP) — California-based biomedical engineering company Chronix Biomedical has opened a $1 million laboratory in Brookings, S.D.

The three workers in the Chronix Biomedical lab near the South Dakota State University campus are doing proprietary work and also contracted work for researchers dealing with human, animal and plant diseases.

Spokesman John DiPietro tells The Associated Press that more workers are expected to be hired as work in the lab expands, though the company doesn't have a specific estimate. Gov. Dennis Daugaard says in a statement that it's testimony that South Dakota offers a good business climate and workforce to growing companies.

DiPietro says Chronix chose Brookings for the lab in part because of a previous working relationship with SDSU. The company also received a loan help from a Brookings bank and development corporation.
