Boat ‘swamped’ by Lake Erie wave; 5 rescued

ASHTABULA, Ohio (WJW) — U.S. Coast Guard crews rescued five people from the water on Lake Erie after their boat was “swamped” by a wave on Saturday morning.

A person thrown from the 22-foot boat called 911 from the water just after 11:30 a.m., according to a social media post from the Coast Guard.

A helicopter crew from a Detroit Coast Guard station found the five people clinging to a cooler, all wearing life vests, about 10 miles off the lakeshore near Ashtabula, according to the post.

They were flown to the Northeast Ohio Regional Airport in Jefferson.

There were “no medical concerns” for the five rescued, reads the post.

2 rescued after boat sinks on Lake Erie

The incident was one of multiple water rescues on Lake Erie on Saturday.

Coast Guard crews and local first responders rescued three people following a Saturday morning distress call, one of whom was unresponsive. A fourth person in the boat was still missing as of Saturday afternoon.

Earlier in the day, two other people were rescued after their boat overturned about a half-mile off the coast in Sheffield Lake.
