Body of kayaker recovered in Bar Harbor

Jul. 14—The body of a missing kayaker was recovered Saturday night in Frenchman Bay, off Bar Harbor, following a two-hour search.

The Department of Marine Resources said 73-year-old Dennis Webber, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, had set out for a solo kayak trip in the vicinity of Seely Road at about 4:30 p.m. Saturday. His family notified the Bar Harbor Police Department around 8:15 p.m. after Webber failed to return home as expected.

Officials launched a search involving members of the Maine Marine Patrol, the U.S. Coast Guard and the National Park Service. Searchers found Webber's body at about 10:30 p.m. in the water near the Thrumcap, a small island near his reported put-in location.

Webber was wearing a life jacket when his body was recovered, according to officials. His kayak has not been found.

Webber's body was transported to the Bar Harbor town pier, where local EMS personnel pronounced him dead. His body was then transported to Jordan Fernald Funeral Home, where it will be examined by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
