UPDATE: No cause determined for Clover Creek Preserve fire in Redding

UPDATE: 5:34 p.m. on Sunday, June 23, 2024

Forward progress of the fire that broke out late Sunday afternoon in Redding's Clover Creek Preserve has been stopped, said Redding Fire Department Battalion Chief Shawn Plummer. The fire in southeast Redding had reached about 9 acres in size, he said.

While the blaze threw up copious amounts of smoke, there were no injuries reported and no homes were damaged, Plummer said, although several wooden fences separating the rear of some homes from the 128-acre preserve were burned.

"It just got our fence and shrubbery," said homeowner Rebecca Lewis, standing on the front sidewalk with her husband, Aaron, and son, Jordan, as fire crews fought the blaze behind their house.

Rebecca Lewis said she called 911 after seeing a huge plume of smoke rising beyond their backyard in the preserve. She said she then alerted neighbors and noted that people along the street were offering their assistance to homeowners closest to where the fire was burning.

Firefighters were working late Sunday afternoon behind about nine homes on a stretch of Forest Hills Drive with backyards abutting the preserve.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, Plummer said.
