Monday is July 1, a day when several new state laws go into effect, including requirements intended to stop illegal drugging at clubs and make it easier to repair a broken iPhone.

Here are a few prominent changes:

Date-rape drug testing

Clubs and bars will be required to offer testing kits for date-rape drugs such as GHB, ketamine and Rohypnol.

In addition, Assembly Bill 1013 requires “bars and clubs to post ‘in a prominent and conspicuous location’ a notice that reads: ‘Don’t get roofied! Drink spiking drug test kits available here. Ask a staff member for details,'” the Los Angeles Times reports.

Right to repair iPhones and other devices

Senate Bill 244 ends the longstanding Apple policy of declining to provide documentation, tools or replacement parts for products such as iPhones.

But this right-to-repair law isn’t just for smartphones; also included are lawnmowers, dishwashers and other appliances.

“The law, introduced by state Sen. Susan Talamantes Eggman (D-Stockton), doesn’t apply to video game consoles, fire alarms and heavy machinery used in agriculture, forestry and construction,” the Times explained.

Hidden fees

Tired of hidden fees? So, too, were the authors of Senate Bill 478.

The charges that must be disclosed upfront to customers include resort fees at hotels, cleaning fees for lodging rental platforms like Airbnb and Vrbo, venue fees for concerts and sporting events, and surcharges for driver benefits and deliveries on apps like DoorDash and Uber Eats,” the Times detailed.

Security deposits

Most landlords can now only require a security deposit of one month’s rent.

Previously, that amount was up to two months’ rent for unfurnished apartments and three months’ rent for furnished units.
