Gov. Gavin Newsom, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other Democrats joined Republicans as California leaders Saturday evening prayed for President Donald Trump after he fell to the ground, injured as gun shots rang out during a rally in Pennsylvania.

Trump issued a lengthy statement describing what he experienced. “I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear,” he said.

Reactions came in swiftly from California’s political world.

“Violence has no place in our democracy,” Newsom said in a tweet.

Pelosi, whose husband was attacked by an intruder in his San Francisco home in 2022, recalled that incident.

“As one whose family has been the victim of political violence, I know firsthand that political violence of any kind has no place in our society. I thank God that former President Trump is safe,” she said.

Republicans also reacted with horror at the shooting, which came two days before the GOP gathers for its national convention in Milwaukee. Trump is scheduled to be formally nominated at the convention.

Rep. David Valadao, R-Hanford said he was “horrified” at the shooting.

Rep. John Duarte, R-Modesto, said “This was clearly an assassination attempt on a presidential candidate. “

Rep. Tom McClintock, R-Elk Grove, saw a higher power at work as Trump appeared to be in good spirits.

“At critical moments in our history the hand of Providence has intervened to protect our country, and I believe we witnessed that today,” he said..

Vice President Kamala Harris, a former California attorney general, said she had been briefed on the incident and that she and her husband “are relieved that he is not seriously injured.”

Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, a Bakersfield Republican, said he was praying for Trump.

California Democrats and Republicans alike condemned the attack.
