Man charged in stabbing attack outside Union Station due in court

CHICAGO — A 25-year-old California man charged with stabbing a 71-year-old woman as she walked her dog in downtown Chicago earlier this week is due in court Friday.

Wilson Barreno faces felony counts of attempted murder in the first degree, aggravated battery causing great bodily harm to a person over 60 and the use of a deadly weapon.

The victim, 71-year-old Arlene Rado, was walking her dog Mickey along the 200 block of South Canal Street when she was grabbed from behind with one arm and stabbed multiple times in her back and the back of her neck, her husband told WGN.

Rado was awake and talking when she arrived at Northwestern Memorial Hospital following the attack, the husband, Alan Rado, said.

Arlene Rado is expected to be OK. The dog was unharmed.

Two bystanders reportedly sprang into action, caught the alleged attacker, Barreno, and held him down until officers arrived and took him into custody about 30 minutes after the attack. Charges were filed Thursday.
