Car chase started by Anne Arundel County Police ends in deadly crash Tuesday afternoon

Anne Arundel County Police started a car chase Tuesday afternoon that ended in Washington, D.C., with two people dead.

Officers in Annapolis spotted a vehicle that matched the description of an armed robbery suspect near Bestgate Road around 12:15 p.m., Anne Arundel Police Chief Amal Awad said at a news conference. Awad said officers pursued the vehicle west on MD Route 50 into Prince George’s County but did not specify where they stopped their chase.

The car then passed into Washington, where it was spotted and pursued by a U.S. Park Police officer. The vehicle crested a hill, crashed into a tree and caught on fire just inside the city line around 1 p.m., Chief of the U.S. Park Police Jessica Taylor said at the news conference. Two people in the vehicle were declared dead at the scene and one was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, Taylor said.

Taylor also said officers recovered a gun they believe was thrown from the vehicle before it crashed.
