Changes coming to temporary registration tags from NJ Motor Vehicle

On July 1, the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission announced that it will begin distributing new temporary registration tags or “temp tags.”

The new tags are set up with a new format that will enhance security features and reduce fraud. This change follows the P.L.2023, c.285 law which aimed to authorize new tags with security measures and procedures. The law also establishes penalties and fines to those who knowingly possess, issue, or display fraudulent temporary tags.

The initiative will start as a rollout that will enlarge throughout the summer. The new format will be phased in gradually. Therefore, motor vehicle dealers will have time to transition to the new tags.

The NJMVC anticipates the complete new format to take over by the early fall.
