Charter fishing boat crew reports explosion prior to fire in Two Rivers harbor, HAZMAT on scene

TWO RIVERS, Wis. (WFRV) – The US Coast Guard helped to assist fire crews in Two Rivers after a reported explosion and fully engulfed fire on a charter fishing boat earlier Saturday morning.

According to a release from the Two Rivers Fire Department (TRFD), HAZMAT crews are currently at the scene, which is in the harbor just west of the Two Rivers Coast Guard Station, conducting chemical cleanup and containment.

Before fire crews arrived at the scene around 10:50 a.m., the crew on the 32-foot charter fishing boat reported hearing an explosion and fire on the boat. Crews arrived to find the fishing boat fully engulfed in flames with heavy black smoke showing.

The crew was able to escape by swimming to shore, authorities say. No injuries were reported.

Quick actions from the US Coast Guard helped to secure the boat to the sea wall in the harbor, allowing flames to be extinguished from the shore. Officials say that coordinated efforts are in the works to salvage the boat from the water.
