Month to month, the highest paid open jobs in South Carolina government are psychiatrist, other types of doctors, lawyers.

But what about the more unusual — the state jobs in some of South Carolina’s most beautiful areas or jobs you might not think of when thinking about government?

Here are a few of the 1,440 jobs advertised on the state jobs website that piqued our interest.

Dairy farm supervisor at Wateree Farm in Rembert — $40,407 - $51,457 a year. That’s at a prison — Wateree Correctional Institution in Sumter County. Enlarged to 7,000 acres about 14 years ago, the farm provides all sorts of food items to other prisons around the state.

The job entails supervising 15 or so inmates in all areas of dairy framing — milking, breeding, feeding, milk processing, culling, and waste management.

Assistant Retail Manager at Hunting Island State Park, South Carolina’s most visited park with about a million people a year. Salary is $30,762.

The job involves accounting of all revenues generated at Lighthouse Giftshop, inventory and training and supervising retail staff. The job also involves registration at the Campground Store.

An associate degree in business, retail or public administration and two years of park experience, administration or managerial experience or a high school diploma, or equivalent, with a minimum four years of related experience required..

Bass Fishing Head Coach at Lander University at a salary of $45,000 a year.

The school is looking for someone who’s been involved in competitive fishing. Afterall, last October, the Greenwood school won the Abu Garcia College Fishing Presented by YETI event on Lake Hartwell with the fish hauled in by Kaleb Brown and Cole Moultonin. They caught five bass — the limit — weighing 17 pounds, 1 ounce, beating out 250 other boats

The job also requires a bachelor’s degree.

Student Activities Coordinator at the Governor’s School for Science & Mathematics in Hartsville. The salary range is $32,686 to $60,471 a year.

This is a full time 10-month position Monday - Friday, 2:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. managing the Student Activity Center “to support the holistic development of an increasingly diverse student body,” the job post says. A bachelor’s degree is required.

4-H Agent with Clemson University in Aiken or Edgefield, salary $37,900 to $56,900 a year.

A 4H agent is a member of the Extension staff of Clemson University to plan education programs. A bachelor’s degree and a year’s work experience is required.

The national 4‑H organization says it is America’s largest youth development organization with six million participants.

Clemson says the program is not just animals and agriculture but also civic engagement and learning to live a healthy lifestyle.

Forestry technician with the state Forestry Commission in Georgetown County at a salary between $31,204 and $32,707 a year. Pee Dee Kingstree Zone

The job entails fire prevention and suppression and responds to forest fire calls and investigates the cause. Assists foresters with activities such as timber marking, tree planting, survival checks, forest insect and disease work, and acreage measurements.

A high school diploma and experience in forest fire protection duties, forestry management, operation of heavy mechanized equipment, or relevant work experience is required. Must pass a physical fitness test that requires a two mile walk carrying a 25 pound pack in 30 minutes.
