Child, 7, killed in farming accident in Franklin County

A 7-year-old boy died Tuesday morning after a farming accident near Mercersburg, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

The child, not named in the police report, got stuck in a piece of machinery while assisting with work in the field. It happened at about 10:15 a.m. at a farm in the area of Mercersburg Road and Young Road, located south of Welsh Run and west of Bino in Montgomery Township.

There is no evidence of foul play, police said.

The police report did not say if the child was pronounced dead at the scene or at a hospital, and a police spokesperson did not immediately respond to an email asking that question.

Members of MMP&W Volunteer Fire Department, Mercersburg, worked on the incident. The department published a post on Facebook discussing the impact on the first responders.

"People some times don't understand the physical and mental toll that being a firefighter/EMT/Paramedic can have on someone. We do this because we love helping our community and we love saving/protecting life and property. However, sometimes it does come with a price! We may be tough but our hearts do break!" the Facebook post reads.

The department also thanked members of Hagerstown (Md.) Fire Department who met the MMP&W EMS personnel at Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown to talk "with them right away to begin the healing process."

A person who answered the phone at MMP&W on Wednesday morning said the chief was not making any comment.
