Chincoteague Pony Auction 2024 sets two huge new records. Find out all about it.

The Chincoteague Pony Auction is a big day to make pony-owning dreams come true, and this year it also set more than one record.

The auction is the biggest annual fundraiser for the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company, which manages the wild pony herd on Assateague Island.

Two records set on fun day at Chincoteague Pony Auction

Here's a by the numbers look at the big day on Thursday.

  • 88 foals were auctioned off.

  • 7 of those returned to the herd as buybacks.

  • $547,700 was generated by the auction to help the fire department tend to the herd, a new record.

  • $50,500 was the highest winning bid for a buyback, also a new record.

  • $6,223 was the average winning bid for a pony

  • $1,600 was the lowest winning bid to take home a pony.
