CHP investigates fatal I-580 motorcycle crash in Oakland

CHP said the motorcycle was struck by “unknown vehicles” and that the motorcyclist died at the scene. CHP said the motorcyclist’s body was on the fourth lane of I-580, and the motorcycle was on the neighboring third lane.

While awaiting dispatch, CHP Officer Adib Zeid told KRON4 that a Royal ambulance truck transporting a patient in a mental health crisis was being followed by an Oakland Police Department vehicle on the third lane.

Zeid said the ambulance crashed into the motorcycle on the third lane. He said dash cam footage from the ambulance shows it hitting the motorcycle, not the motorcyclist’s body. Aside from the fatal crash, Zaid said no one was injured.

CHP is currently investigating the crash, and the identity of the motorcyclist will be released by the coroner’s office upon notifying the next of kin.
