City council approves more than $340,000 to fix Oakland neighborhood sidewalks

TOPEKA (KSNT) – A much-needed project is coming to the Oakland Community. The governing body voted Tuesday, July 2, at city council, to spend over $340,000 to add and improve sidewalks within the district.

Nine different streets and 20 different blocks are slated for the project, and it will start sometime late summer to early fall.

While not every sidewalk in Oakland needs improvements, Councilwoman Christina Valdivia-Alcala tells 27 News that many of them make it challenging for senior citizens, people with mobility issues and families with strollers to walk on.

“This focus specifically on Oakland is very meaningful and I believe knowing those that I serve in dealing with them on a day to day basis that they will be very happy about this,” Councilwoman Valdivia-Alcala said.

With Oakland being a low-to-moderate income district, Valdivia-Alcala says seeing this kind of money go into the neighborhood is very affirming.
