City of Kings Mountain approves budget, fee increases included

Kings Mountain employees will receive a wage increase this year, and residents will see some increased fees following the approval of the new budget.

City Council voted on and approved the budget during its June meeting.

The total budget for the fiscal year 2024-25, which began July 1, is $60.9 million.

HIghlights of the budget:

  • A 2.5% across the board wage increase for all city employees.

  • One third of employees, with the focus on public works and water this year, will have a class study, and the results of the study will be incorporated as increases to those who are below market.

  • Property tax will be maintained at its current rate of 48 cents per $100 valuation.

  • An approximate 7% average increase to electric rates.

  • Increase in water/sewer of 9.75% increase across the board.

  • Solid waste increase of $1.50 per month. Rates went up from $15 to $16.50.

  • Capital projects include a $2.6  million streetscape project and several park projects, including $980,000 for Davidson park, $265,000 for Thombs Park and $50,000 for Ramseur Park.

  • City Hall will receive $195,000 for planning work.

Budget details:

  • General fund: $24 million

  • Powell bill: $352,000

  • Emergency phone: $115,000

  • Economic incentive: $1.8 million

  • Comprehensive water and sewer: $9.6 million

  • Stormwater fund: $790,000

  • Electric: $18 million

  • Gas: $6 million
