Coast Guard rescues driver who jumped off Bay Bridge running from law enforcement

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — The United States Coast Guard responded after a man plunged off the eastbound side of the Bay Bridge Thursday afternoon in an apparent effort to avoid law enforcement, according to the California Highway Patrol. The CHP got a call regarding a two-vehicle crash at 2:17 p.m. involving a Kia Soul that overturned.

The crash left debris all over the roadway. The driver, a white male between 20 and 30 years old, was the Kia’s sole occupant. According to the CHP, he left the vehicle and ran eastbound on the center median. The Oakland Fire Department responded to the incident, which occurred east of Treasure Island.

According to the CHP, the man climbed onto the railing and appeared to be looking down over the railing, trying to figure out how to get off the bridge. The man then plunged into the water and was seen backstroking away toward the westbound side of the bridge.

The CHP called the United States Coast Guard, which responded to the incident. The man was successfully rescued from the water. The other driver in the crash was uninjured.

The Coast Guard has detained the and is assessing him for injuries.

The left lanes three eastbound lanes on the bridge were temporarily blocked but have since been reopened. Eastbound traffic is slow as a result of the incident and the downtown area may see residual traffic impacts, according to the San Francisco Municipal Transit Authority.
