Columbia Falls man fends off grizzly attack with handgun

Jul. 19—A Columbia Falls man shot and killed a grizzly bear after he was attacked while picking huckleberries on Thursday evening.

The 72-year-old man was hospitalized due to injuries sustained in the attack, according to Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks information.

The man was alone picking huckleberries on Flathead National Forest lands off the North Fork Road when he reported encountering a bear that charged and attacked him. He used a handgun to fend off the grizzly.

Wardens and bear specialists who investigated the incident confirmed that an adult female grizzly bear was killed and determined it was a surprise defensive encounter. The state agency is working to verify if any cubs are present.
