A Columbus teenager is charged with fatally shooting his stepfather, police say

A Columbus teenager is charged with shooting and killing his stepfather, the Columbus Police Department said in a news release Friday.

Police say 17-year-old William Burgess is charged with the murder of 38-year-old Evan Garner.

A Columbus police press release said officers responded to a shooting in the Parkwood neighborhood in east Columbus Thursday night around 10:45 p.m. Emergency medical services tried to resuscitate Garner, but a deputy coroner pronounced him dead just before 11:30 p.m.

Burgess was taken into custody by the Violent Crimes Unit, according to police. He was charged with murder and possessing a gun during the commission of a crime, both felonies.

He is scheduled to appear in Recorder’s Court Thursday for his a preliminary court hearing.
