Columbus trash pickup: Does Columbus Day 2024 change your trash schedule?
You might want to hold off on putting your trash bins out tonight.
Around today's date in 1492, explorer Christopher Columbus landed in the Americas. The ripple effects from this event can be felt in obvious ways, like the European powers' subsequent colonization of the Americas, which eventually led to the birth of the U.S., and in less obvious ways, like how trash collection in Columbus, Ohio, changes this week.
When Christopher Columbus sailed to America, he likely didn't have "to change trash days for people 531 years in the future in a city named after him" as a goal. But change them he has, albeit indirectly.
Here's how your trash collection in Columbus will be impacted by Columbus Day.
When is my trash collected this week?
Garbage crews will not collect on Columbus Day, so your trash collection day will change this week.
If you live in one of the city's "Color Collection" areas, your trash day will move by one day. For example, residents in the pink color collection zone have had their trash picked up on Mondays since Sept. 9. Going forward, their trash will be picked up on Tuesdays, at least until another holiday comes around and moves the trash days again.
The full-color collection schedule is available here.
Some residents don't reside in a color zone and instead have a two-day window when their trash is picked up every week. Normally, trash gets picked up on the first day of this two-day window, but during holiday weeks it is instead picked up on the second day of the window, according to the city of Columbus' website.
For example, if your window is usually Tuesday and Wednesday, your trash will be picked up on Wednesday this week.
If you still need help figuring out when your garbage will go away, you can use the city's Collection Day Lookup or call the city's Color Collection Hotline numbers listed below.
