Concealed carry on campus at a local level

BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) – On Monday July 1, 2024 the Campus Self-Defense Act will go into effect.

The Campus Self-Defense Act was passed by the West Virginia Legislature and Governor Jim Justice in 2023.

This allows people to carry a concealed handgun on college campuses across West Virginia if they have a concealed carry permit.

59News traveled to WVU Tech in Beckley to learn more about the protocols and procedures students must follow.

Jamel Corey, Chief of Police at WVU Tech, explained campus administrators and campus law enforcement are carefully planning to ensure everyone’s safety.

“Whenever the law was passed by our legislature, the university not only here at Tech but all three campuses automatically started our planning committees,” said Corey.

As stated earlier, you must have a concealed weapon permit, but this raises questions about storing the handgun.

Corey said there must be a place for handguns to be stored. These locations are being implemented.

“The law requires that the university has a place for students to store those items on campus…they are already in place, and they are actually getting built here on campus,” said Corey to 59News.

Corey said concealed carry is allowed in common areas but dormitories are off limits.
