Connecticut Voters Guide: State House District 51: Stewart vs. Waldron: What they have to say

The Nov. 5 presidential election will also include races for both houses of the Connecticut General Assembly. Voters in Connecticut are permitted to participate in early voting, but are restricted in the reasons they can vote by absentee ballot.

The 51st Connecticut State House district includes the communities of Killingly, Putnam, and Thompson.

The 2024 race will feature a race for an open seat for the 51st House District between Republican Chris Stewart and Democrat Renee Waldron. Republican Ricky Hayes, who has held the seat since 2019 is not seeking re-election.

The Connecticut State House is the lower chamber of the Connecticut General Assembly. There are 36 state senators, and 151 state representatives. The salary for state representatives and state senators is $40,000, a figure that was increased from $28,000 in 2023.

Why are you running? I am running for State Representative to champion the issues and bills that will shape our future: education and youth development, public safety, and reducing energy costs.

What three bills would be your priority this term?

  1. Education and Youth Development: Our children are the cornerstone of our community. I am committed to enhancing educational resources, supporting after-school programs, and ensuring that every young person has access to opportunities that will empower their growth and potential.

  2. Public Safety: Safety is not just about response but prevention. I advocate for community policing, mental health support, and proactive measures that keep our neighborhoods secure and our residents at ease.

  3. Reduced Energy Costs: Lowering the financial burden of energy is crucial for families and businesses. I will push to remove the “Public Benefits” charge on our utility bills. This would immediately reduce most utility bills by 20%.
