Coralville's 5th Street will reopen later this week. How long will it last?

A heavily trafficked road will reopen this week two months after construction began.

Coralville's 5th Street will welcome traffic again this Thursday or Friday on the main thoroughfare leading into the nearby HyVee and Casey's, City Engineer Scott Larson told the city council.

The closure was part of the first phase of the city's 5th Street reconstruction, a $5 million, five-phase resurfacing project.

Construction also included the addition of new crosswalks and decorative street lights. Trees will also be planted along the roadside in addition to new landscaping of city-owned property.

The revamped road will again allow direct access to the Casey's and HyVee parking lots from the adjacent neighborhood.

5th Avenue to remain open through July 4th weekend

The entirety of 5th Avenue will remain open through Monday, July 8 before the next phase begins, allowing the Coralville 4thFest parade to navigate its usual route near S.T. Morrison Park.

Subsequent phases will smooth the 5th Street roadway past the Coral Senior Residences, ST. Morrison Park, and the public library.

A portion of 5th Street, from just west of 18th Avenue to the east side of 1799 5th Street, will close on July 8. Several blocks east of 1799 5th Street (Coral Senior Residences) to 1684 5th Street are expected to close for construction next spring.

The remaining blocks of 5th Street through the intersection with 12th Street will be closed next summer through the fall.

The entire project is expected to be completed by spring 2026.
