'My crews dug their way to him': One man injured in house explosion in Walworth County

A house exploded in Walworth County Tuesday resulting in a man becoming trapped in the basement prior to being transported to a hospital via medical helicopter.

The Walworth County Sheriff's Office said the incident took place at about 2:18 p.m. on Kulow Road in the town of Lafayette following numerous calls of a structure fire and reports of an explosion. When sheriff's deputies arrived they reported a small fire and the home leveled.

Elkhorn Fire Chief Trent Eichmann said at a news conference that a man was located in the basement about 40 to 50 minutes after the call came in and then transported to a hospital via Flight for Life. His condition was not released.

"He made verbal contact with my crews and my crew dug their way to him," Eichmann said. "They ended up cutting him out from where he was trapped and got him on the board, got him out of the basement."

Multiple agencies responded and searched for other survivors, the sheriff's office said in a statement Tuesday that after speaking to family members it is believed the man was the only person in the house. Eichmann said it is also believed the man is the only person who lived in the home.

Eichmann said he didn't want to "speculate" on a cause of the fire until the investigation is done.
