Crown Point man who struck officers with American flag during Capitol riot gets 2.5 years

WASHINGTON — A Crown Point man received two and a half years in federal prison for assaulting multiple officers with an American flag while storming the U.S. Capitol.

Dale Huttle, of Crown Point, was facing charges of assaulting, resisting, or impeding officers with a dangerous weapon, interfering with law enforcement officers during a civil disorder, a related felony and misdemeanor offenses.

“I think we ought to bum rush the Capitol building. Arrest them all. We’ve got enough people to do that,” Huttle reportedly said as he marched towards the Capitol on Jan. 6 alongside his nephew and co-defendant, Matthew Huttle.

Matthew Huttle was sentenced to six months in prison last November for his role in the incident.

As the pair made their way to the Capitol grounds, the DoJ said Dale Huttle yelled and berated at police officers. He then lunged forward and forcibly jabbed his flagpole directly into the stomach of a Metropolitan Police Department officer.

The officer suffered a back injury and Huttle then “forcibly” jabbed the flagpole at another officer — causing them to fall down the stairs. As other officers attempted to pull the fallen officer to their feet, Huttle continued to jab the officers with the flagpole.

“I’m not ashamed of being there. It was our duty as patriots.” Huttle said in a news interview after the riot. “(I’m) the ultimate patriot because I put myself on the line to defend the country. And I have, I have no regrets. I will not say I’m sorry.”

Huttle was arrested on Nov. 17, 2022.

The case was investigated by the FBI’s Indianapolis and Washington field offices. Since Jan. 6, 2021, more than 1,450 people have been charged.

Note: A prior release on his arrest listed Huttle as 61. He was listed as 73 in Tuesday’s press release and WGN News reached out to clarify.
